UP Projects and The Architecture Foundation are delighted to announce Duggan MorrisArchitects as the winner of the international competition to design a new Floating Cinema for summer 2013.

The Hackney-based practice's outstanding design was selected from a shortlist of four international practices including OBRA (New York/Beijing) Nilsson Pflugfelder (London/Berlin) and vPPR (London) by a panel of judges including Lady Patty Hopkins (Hopkins Architects),Sarah Weir OBE (Legacy List), Sarah Ichioka (Architecture Foundation), Nina Pope(Somewhere), Karen Guthrie (Somewhere) and Emma Underhill (UP Projects).

Duggan Morris's proposal “A Strange Cargo of Extra-Ordinary Objects” mixed a robust and practical design with a highly inventive and imaginative response to the brief.

Following from the success of the pilot Floating Cinema project in 2011 (designed by Studio Weave), artist duo Somewhere will again be devising the “Extra-Ordinary” programme of on-board screenings, canal tours, talks and workshops for the new Floating Cinema, which will launch in June 2013.

The Floating Cinema 2013 has been commissioned by the Legacy List with corporate partnerBloomberg as part of the Bloomberg East series of artist-led programmes to animate the waterways in East London working in partnership with the Canal and River Trust.
